Emmy and I (Daddy) set off to Wildwood Conservation Area to hike 5.7Kms to our campsite. The site was on the edge of a reservoir and canoeing was an option however there was a lot of motorized boats causing a lot of wake – outside of my comfort level so we had to hike in.
Emmy was very excited to use the trekking poles and to make smores (of course)!
Some highlights:
- 5 mins into hiking Emmy declares, “I love backcountry camping”
- “I am nervous about backcountry camping” – I love that she has the self-awareness and we had a great conversation about what she was scared about. A few minutes later she says, “It’s just like the Rosie Rivere book!” — this book has a quote something like, “Things aren’t meant to be feared, simply to be understood”
- Emmy collected firewood all by herself! She stayed within eyesight and was an excellent gatherer!
- Respecting the fire and roasting marshmallows together – Emmy was so careful and understood the risks/dangers
- Being scared of leaf silhouettes on the tent. She didn’t want them there! But then she wanted me to take a pic to send to Mummy! Silly
- Being a trooper! Her little legs got tired often and I carried her to give her a break. After a particularly tough climb I was pretty out of breath and she could tell I was beat – she insisted on getting down to give me a break!
- Sharing burgers… After a little campfire cooking oops (AKA I dropped a burger into the fire), Emmy said “that’s okay we can share Daddy” – luckily the burgers we brought were massive.
- “I am a professional smore maker” – declared Emmy after her first smore
- “I am professional at backcountry camping”
- Emmy stopping and asking “what’s that sound?” at literally every sound
- Emmy stopping and asking “what’s that smell? At every new smell
What an adventure!
